Why Microsoft will never win against an open-source platform like Firefox?

I'm a big believer in MS Windows 7 - I really think the company is taking the right direction with its OS. However, Microsoft recently just launched a "'Get the facts' campaign", in an attempt to promote Internet Explorer 8 (which in my opinion is not a usable browser). It contains a chart that compares IE8 to Firefox and Chrome. Needless to say, IE8 comes out as the clear winner (SERIOUSLY .. haha), with MS suggesting it is the only browser to provide features like 'privacy,' 'security,' 'reliability.' It even claims to have Firefox beat in 'customizability.'
Here's my question for Microsoft, WHY DON'T YOU ASK YOUR USERS?
As of May 2009, 14.5% of all web users still use IE6 - convert them first, then worry about Firefox, Chrome and Safari users. Microsoft deserves a big WHAMMY on this one.
